Progress Over Perfection

Welcome to all of my new subscribers and friends...this blog is the start to a rebrand of myself, a refresh of my business and a promise that 2021 will be a better year than 2020. It has to be...because HONESTLY...what was that? We're going to start this year off with my favourite motto, catchphrase, battle cry...whatever you'd like to call it. Here it is.

Progress over perfection.

It's quite simple in it's own way, but there's a lot within it that means more. Let's begin.

Progress. Progress is ever-changing. Progress isn't linear - it fluctuates. It's about moving even though you feel stuck. It's about pushing past societal norms and doing what you want. It's about the journey, not the destination.

Now let's switch gears.

Perfection. Perfection isn't real, and to be quite honest it's a lie. I've never met someone or had something that is absolutely perfect. The thing is, perfection is subjective. Just because one person says something is perfect, doesn't mean someone else views it the same way. So why do we strive for perfection?

I've been there. I've done it for the past 23 years of my life. Striving for #1, striving for the most followers, striving to get noticed, be popular, have the perfect body, the highest grades...you name it; but, where did it get me?

ABSOLUTELY nowhere. All the stress, the tears, the anxiety, the disappointment...got me literally no where. I'm in the same spot as I was. Feeling more upset, more impatient and more depleted as the days went by.

I came across this motto in a book I was reading, and something in me switched. Why was I basing how I viewed myself and my achievements on other peoples opinions and society's guidelines? Why did I want to be perfect? What would I gain from having status? I couldn't come up with a solid argument...so here I am.

I value progress over perfection for more reasons than one now, and I wanted to share this with you, because I know all of us need a reminder sometimes.

I want you to stop living your life for other people or for society or for the attribute of "perfect." Perfection shouldn't be and isn't your end goal. You need to be YOU. Truly and honestly you.

Your strength. Your perseverance. Your ability to literally go through all of life's shit (shoutout to 2020!!!!) and keep going. You are enough. Don't strive for perfection. It's a waste of time and your sanity.

Progress is about trying. Progress is about moving forward. I don't want you talking down to yourself or telling yourself you're not enough. Because it's not true. It's not. Even if you didn't give it your full 100%, it still counts. You still need to be proud of yourself. You're doing the thing. You're killing it.

You...as who you are, are enough. I promise. Keep your progress going. Keep moving in the direction that you want to go. I know you'll get to where you need to be.

Till next time,

Emily Nicole
